Bad Connection? Stalling, shutting off, etc.

Hello again everyone, I posted this originally in the carb forum because I thought I we having a fuel delivery problem, but I am now leaning towards a major electrical issue.
I have an 81 KZ750 LTD with 18k on it.

This started about a week ago, with some hesitation around 5k rpms, and progressed, now the bikes whole electrical system is fighting me.
Yesterday, while riding, the bike was hesitating and when it struggled, the low fuel light came on, and then went off when the problem cleared. Later in the day, I went for a ride and it was struggling more, the fuel light was flashing on and off, but my tank was full.
I went right home, and when flipped the on/off witch into the Off position, the whole bike's electrical system shut down, with the key still in the on position, now it is hit or miss when I turn the key if lights, etc. come on.
Please Help Me!
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike, welcome to the nuthouse. [you'll see:silly: ]
Your description of the problem points toward a possibly dodgy ignition switch.
I noticed your cables on the RHS of handlebars, how long since the bars were changed?
Back to the switch, disconnect battery, go into headlight, and identify the cable coming fom the ignition switch, unplug it.
With multimeter set to ohms, confirm switch is reliable.
Try waggling key while checking. You should have reliable and reproducible action.

A few supplies to get before you start looking for the problem. A selection of 400-600 grit sandpaper, some small files to clean the bullet connectors, some plastic compatible spray electrical cleaner(a good brand is De-Oxit) www.de-oxit.com is the website. A needle nose plier to squeeze the loose faston or quick connector.

The factory shop manual with the wiring diagram,a multi-meter for votage and continuity checks, a well lit comfortable place to sit as this troubleshooting may take a while.

The fuses need a good looking at as they can fail and still look o.k. They need to be reomoved from the clips and checked either with a multi-meter set on ohms(for continuity) or a self powered test light to determine if the fuse is good.

The fuse clips must be free of corrosion for a good circuit to function along with any electrical connection on the bike.

Ignition switches have been known to fail and this possibility could have happened here, but do a process of elimination before ordering parts.

it sounds to me like you have a problem with your ignition switch or switch gear routing also one other area to check is your battery terminals the might have loosened up also double check your fuse block, kawi fuse blocks were notorious for over heating and melting down if that is the case.just find a ato fuse block from any auto parts place rewire it check to see if you have any power getting thru the fuse block with a test light be fore you do any thing else. also double check your battery voltage and check the levels in your battery you can also check the specific gravity in the cells you can buy small testers resonable cheep at any auto parts store.
