Street Legal Bare Minimums?

So.. The old man was big on stripping a bike down to bare bones. I kinda like the looks of it, myself. Question:

To keep my bike street legal, do I need to keep my speedo/tach, turn signals, and right mirror?

Live in Colorado, but will be moving back to either Mississippi or Louisiana sometime in the near future, maybe. Not entirely sure yet. Let's just go with Colorado.

Thanks.

I would contact the DMV to see what is required in your state, also the ones you are looking to move to, better to be safe than sorry

as the judge once told me ignorance of the law is not excuse, pay the fine or else

Im in illinois, on my daily rider 74 z1, i have taken the front turn signals off and put mini stalk turnsignals in the back. I took the mirror's off when i switched from the clubman bars back to stock, and i haven't gotten back to putting them back on. I have full gauges on it. I have talked to a few police about my bike and all of them said it was completely legal.

If you go to the AMA website it tells you the bare minimum you need for your bike to be street legal in each state.I think that's where I saw it at.

grinch77 is right, I just went on the AMA website and found this. You can check and state for the laws.

The thing the AMA doesn't tell you is that Federal DOT standards trump state laws and if the cops want to get you on the federal standards they can. (Like in Washington State)

Since the DOT doesn't have police cruisers, I would worry about the state LEOs. Every state has a website and every state website will tell you what equipment is needed. I would tell you what Texas requirements are but it doesn't make the LEAST BIT OF DIFFERENCE as this info is not relevant in Colorado. Go to your state website and do some research..

In MD if the vehicle has historic tags, there is no inspection, therefore no repair order can be written, my 79 KZ1000 has no mirrors, no turn signals, for a while I did not even run a headlight, it has one now, and no gauges, never had any one say anything to me and I ride on and off a federal military installation every day.

Hey zombie, where in MD are you at? I live not far from Ft Meade, used to live near Andrews, years ago and work across the street from Bethesda Naval Hospital.
