Ignition Switch was created by drmadd95
On my 79 KZ650B I was going to swap out my ignition switch for one from a 78 KZ650D. I thought they would be identical; however, the 79 has one extra wire coming from the switch (separate from the 6pin harness) that the 78 doesn't have. Any ideas on what this is for? I didn't want to swap them out not knowing what this extra wire is for.

Thanks

If not already done, might help to look under KZ information "Filebase" and compare ignition switch connections in the wiring diagrams for '78 and '79 to determine which additional wire was added in '79.

Good Luck! :)

Is it a brown wire? If it is, then it's +12v switch wire. It should only be hot when the ignition switch is turned on.

Thanks, I'll check out that database. Also I'll test that wire when I get home from work, I think it was a brown wire.

Yeah, the ignition switches between the 78 and the 79 are not compatible according to the diagrams. I wanted to swap them since the 78 has two original keys and was in better shape.

I ended up taking both switches apart and swapping the tumblers. I then swapped the seat and the steering locks as well. Now everything matches and I have two original keys.
