Is it stock?

In checking over my recently acquired '80 KZ1000 B4, I finally removed the case guards so I could get at the points cover and, I found this (see pic). The only markings on it are "Japan". I checked some parts breakouts online and found that it is probably stock. My manual (PDF scan) only shows points type ignition but I have the Kaw IC ignitor box mounted under the right side cover also. The PO installed gray Dyna coils (2.2 ohm) with yellow copper plug wires.

Should I be thinking of upgrading to a full Dyna system or, as this is still working, stick with what I have? Also, what plug gap should I run? Right now I'm at .034 and they seem to be OK.

That's the stock Kawasaki pickup for '79 & '80 KZ's including the LTD. Don't know why the PO put 2.2 ohm Dyna coils on it, suprised they work- most Kaws including my '79 MKll which had the same ignition are 3.0 ohm Green coils.I use a Dyna S pickup with green coils and run about .028 -.030 gap. The advantage to the Dyna S is you can move ignition timing around easily for tuning ; you have to slot the plate of the oem unit to be able to move timing from factory setting.

Most of the ignitions of that style came with coils in the 2.4 to 2.6 ohm range. Some of the early (79 & 80) versions came with different coils and possibly a ballast. The 2.2 should work ok even if they draw a tiny bit more current. If the module burns out, you can make one for about $30 or $40.

Gee, why would I do that when Babbits has them for only $525.50!

Sonny, that is the stock IC ignitor pickup coil set. If it is working, put the cover back on and leave it alone till you have to push the bike. If you do use Dyna 3 ohm coils, I would remove the ballast resistor, if one is installed. The thing probably has more resistance now than when installed anyway and will just lessen your spark. If you have the stock coils, just leave the ballast resistor in place although I would test resistance to see if it is still in spec.
