Over wound / High Output Alternator Stator
20 Sep 2008 20:15
I have a KZ900 and am doing some research regarding the charging issues these bikes have. I have noticed that some web shops list their stators as "over wound" or otherwise claim that the stator has 10-15% higher output than stock.
Anyone have any experience or insight into these high output stators?
The bike will be upgraded to Dyna S ignition and coils, modern type rectifier /regulator combo and AGM battery. I'm also considering converting to a HID headlight in the future, if so I will rewire the whole bike to handle the startup current for the HID.
Thanks

"Overwinding" will allow the charging system to work at a lower rpm than the stock system does. Any excess is wasted as heat through the rectifier/regulator package.
www.electrosports.com sells both stators and reg/rect stuff.

Knowing myself, it might look like a good idea to invest in an over wound stator. I tend to make short trips at fairly low RPMs. Although I have to admit that I have yet to ride my KZ900, I came from a Honda VFR750F 1993ish, so I do not know the nature of this beast.
Elektrosport did not have any stators for the 1976 and up KZ900, or KZ1000 for that matter, listed on their web page. Any other sources that might carry both?

My stator go to list:
1. www.electrosport.com (already been there)
2. www.rmstator.com
3. www.customrewind.com
4. www.ricksmotorsportselectrics.com
If no joy here I'd Google to find other places.
