bare bones charging system

My 810 build is done and it is a blast to ride. That is until my battery dies:( . I am running a standalone dyna 2000 system, thus no charging system. I have a stator and regulator/rectifier from a 78 kz650 i believe. The regulator/rectifier has 4 wires coming from it. 2 yellow wires, a black wire, anda a white/red wire. Obviously the 2 yellow wires pair up with the 2 yellow wires on the stator. Is the black wire a ground and the white/red goes to power? I tried this combo with no luck. Sometimes the wires would become warm, and you could feel the regulator getting hot. What am i doing wrong here?

I just looked it up in the 78 KZ650 wiring diagram, and there should be two yellow wires (go to stator), one red/white (goes to battery), and a yellow/black wire (goes to ground).

No. Yours should be 3-phase with a brown sense-line. The 78 650 is 1-phase with no sense-line.

Look for the Mattylight bare bones thread.
