Can anyone ID these gauges?
25 Aug 2008 12:54 - 25 Aug 2008 12:58
Just bought them off EBay, and hope to use them as a replacement for my stock M2 gauges. When I put in the GPz cams, I lost my tach since these cams have no tach gear. So I've been looking for an electronic tach replacement. These look like they will bolt onto my existing bracket.
But I'd like to know what model they were originally from. The seller didn't know. He just said they had a tag on them marked "KZ/CSR". They are not from a KZ1000 CSR.
The speedo is mechanical, 140mph. It has idiot lighs for High Beam in the bottom left corner and Neutral in the bottom right corner.
Tach is electronic and has 10K redline and idiot lights for Oil (left), Head Lamp (center) and Fuel (right).
Anyone know what model/year these came from?
Thanks.

I'll guess a 1981-82 KZ1000K LTD, although the J had an electronic tach also, I've never had a J so I don't know what the J gauges look like.

Thanks, Steel. But I don't think that's right. Here's why.
I don't think any KZ1000s from that era had 10K redlines. Also, the '81-82 LTDs had a gas gauge mounted between the speedo and tach, like this one: tinyurl.com/5erzht (disregard the description on this ad--the seller was wrong about it being a '78)
The tach I have has a fuel idiot light. I don't think it would have come from a gauge cluster with a separate fuel gauge.

They would have to be 1983 or newer because 1980-82 used 85mph speedo and less than 650cc going by the 140mph and 10K redline, and what in the heck had a volt guage on the tach? That's a new one on me.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

It's interesting the tach has a voltge scale much like my 82 GPZ1100 B2 has. To make it function as a voltmeter you have to press a switch and hold it to see the battery voltage, after release it again was a tach.
What year did the mandated 85 mph speedometers come out? These might be just before that.

Yep, these have the push button switch for the voltage test. I just need to figure out where I'm going to mount the button.
In this other thread , there is a photo of a set of gauges that are VERY similar to mine, posted by Wild and KZ Guy. The Speedo is just slightly different though--my trip odo is on the bottom. His is on the top. He said his came from a Spectre 750. Looks like he made a special bracket to mount the voltage test button.
I think we're getting warmer.

That's what I was thinking when I saw the pic, Spectre 750.

Well, I mounted the gauges on my bike last night. Bolted right on to my existing bracket. I had to get a little creative with the wiring. The new gauges have one 9-pin connector, and my stock gauges had two 6-pin connectors.
I was able to find a wiring diagram for the 750 Spectre in the filebase, and it seemed to match my gauges perfectly. So using that to compare against my M2 wiring diagram, I was able to get everything mapped out and swiched to the right connector type. I also had to run a new wire from the black lead on my 1-4 coil to the black wire coming from the tach--this is the lead that reads the coil pulse.
I still haven't figured out where I'm going to mount the voltage test button. But I'll work on that later.
I fired up the bike, and everything worked perfectly the first time. I love it when a plan comes together!
So for anyone looking to convert a KZ1000-M bike to electronic tach, look for gauges from an '82-3 KZ750-N1/2 Spectre. It is a fairly easy bolt-on procedure.
Another nice benefit of this conversion is that I now have a 140mph Speedo instead of the stock 85mph one. Now my bike can go MUCH faster!
The minor downside is that the 750 tach has a 10K redline. As long as I know what the true redline is, no big deal. But if anyone else rides the bike, they need to be made aware of this.
