We need model and year to help with your problem, But suspect broken tach cable from engine to tach.

If the tach is electric then more troubleshooting will be required. The condition of the electrical system such as clean electrical connectors, and no broken/melted wires makes some places to look.

Order a new tach cabel. It is most likely the cabel.

It happened to me after I added clubmans.

THe cabel seemed fine, but after replacing it, the tach worked fine.

Other than that if the replaced cabel does not fix the problem, then it maybe the tach itself and you can find one on ebay for cheap or send it to Wired georges contact who refurbishes tachs for a relatively good price.
