So i got my new tach and speedo cables from Z1 today.:) I put them on and started up the motor. The tach needle climbed up to about 1k but does not match the engine as i rev it:unsure: It would climb a little above 2k but thats it. I would guess i was actually running about 4-5k. I noticed that there is a spider web or something like it under the glass and the needle is caught in the middle of it.

Do you think this would be enough to hold the needle from moving?

I should probably see if i can find another tach, its in kinda rough shape anyway...

spider webs are pretty tough, but the worm gear should have had enough force to drive the needle through the web. Im also in need of a new tach. Mine jumps all over the place and does not read accuratly to redline. I think the oil that dapmens the needle is probably gone. Im going with an electric tach this time, I think Jeff from Z1 Enterprises sells them.

actually a spiders web will in fact stop the needles on s speedo or tach quite well ! youll have to remove the cover and get it outta there to cure it. also if your tach or speedo is jumpin around and not reading somewhat true can be caused by some people using washers where the rubber mounting dampers are to tighten up loose fitting old rubber parts. ask me how i know this :) been there did it myself. steve

Well i took my tach apart. I cleaned out the webs and found out that this is not what is holding the needle. As you can see in the picture the arrow is pointing at the metal cone. You can barely see it but there is rather sticky goo on the outside of the cone that is restricting the movement of the needle. Everything else seems to be OK. I guess i will clean that stuff off and try it.
