Would a bad coil blow main power fuses?
03 Jul 2008 14:44
My bike suddenly started blowing fuses today.
It was raining very hard.
I had little time and simply had to go a little further, so I took a calculated risk. I jumped the fuse.
The bike ran another 2 miles then stopped sparking, at the same time the idiot lights became dim.
There were smoke wisps from under the tank.
The power wire, running through the fuse up to the ignition switch, did not look heat stressed.
I recently put in a Dyna ignition and apparently there are issues with matching impedance to the coils.
I believe that I fried a coil.
Any thoughts?

It was water.
The connectors got doused and caused shorts. It is all up and running now. Close call.

I've posted before about using a very good electrical contact cleaner/preservative called De-Oxit made by Caig labratories in San Diego Ca. Try it as it will improve all electrical conductivity (motorcycle connectors, cell phone charging connections, cordless phone charging bays, etc)

You can also use silicone grease to seal off connections that are arcing down and causing failures if necessary.
