KZ750 - GPZ750 IC Igniter Mod

From the The GPZ Modification FAQ
The 1984-85 900 Ninja has a 35 degree box with no rpm limiter (box # 21119-1111) that I use in the race bike. The 86-87 1000R Ninja has the 35 degree box "with" the rpm limiter at 10,600 rpm ( box # 21119-1165 ) that I use in the street bike. THESE BOXES WILL ONLY FIT IN THE 83-85 GPz750 models and work the same other than one having the limiter.

The 86-87 1000R Ninja boxes can be made to fit the 82 and "earlier" Kz/GPz750. But you'll also need to get the large "single" plug with 6" of wire attached that mates with this box.

So, this mod replaces the mechanical advance with a electronic version. I am assuming that in order to put it on a KZ750 you would ALSO have to toss the mechanical advance and pickup coils and replace them with ones from a GPZ (single plate and trigger) along with the Ninja IC Igniter box. Correct?

Is there something I am not seeing?

You have it right.

GPzInfested converted the 83 GPz750 motor in his KZ650 to KZ750 ignition, made things a lot simpler. If you plan on using 83-85 GPz750 style ignition, be sure to get the plug that matches the igniter.

Hmmm, I don't think that the mechanical advance is replaced... the only thing I would think needed done is to modify the plug that comes up off the pickup coils.

The 83-85 GPz750 (and the others listed) don't use a mechanical advance, and the KZ750 pickups won't work with the GPz ignition rotor.

The GPz750 (and others listed) ignitor uses a 6 wire plug (one of the wires is for the tach) that won't fit the KZ750 ignitor.

So to use the GPz stuff on the KZ, you have to use the GPz pickup mounting plate, pickups, rotor, igniter, and the appropriate ignitor plug.

We went the other way on GPzInfested's GPz750 motor, we converted it to KZ750 ignition, so I've already been through the whole thing :)

I was told the pickups from the e-advance motors won't fit into the mech-advance motors. The pickup frame won't fit in. At least, that is the case on the 550 motors, and the 550's, 650's, and 750's use the same ignitions.

My buddy did the same thing as steell... he put a mech-advance ignition into an 82 or 83 gpz750 motor, but it meant replacing everything in the system except the ignition coils. (This was because he was too poor to buy a replacement box for the gpz, we just threw in a system from a kz550 we were parting out.)

Lou, weren't you talking about enabling the built in advance on the HEI modules at one time?
What ever happened to that? Did you ever get around to it? Did it work out?

The HEI modules don't have any ignition timing related electronics. They are only dwell-control devices. At least the modules I'm using are dwell-control only.

I was considering making an external circuit to mimic the mechanical advance then use the HEI as the ignitor, but the mechanical advance works so nicely, I just haven't had the need to work on it yet. It's on a far back burner. :)

Re "appropriate igniter plug" I also used the z750 stuff on my gpz/zr engine, but theres a different plug on the zr head "DR8ES", basiclly the same as the standard "B8ES" plug but with a smaller thread and a R for Resistor. Could this be causing my rough idling? Do resistor type plugs work with dyna coils and z750 ignitor?
