found a sweet speedo on J&P cycles and was wondering some things. the speedo is for a harley will the cable ends match? I mean will the speedo cable on my kz1000 work on a harley guage ?
next they ask what is the ratio. 1 to 1 ,2 to 1, 2240 to 60, are these compatable with a kz? it would be sweet if this would work because they have the idiot lights incorperated in them..

Hey guys, I was looking at the same speedo and had the same question. I found on previous posts that all japanese bikes are pretty much standard 2240:60 ratio but can anybody enlighten us as to whether our cable will go into an american speedo?
If I remember right, My old Volkswagon cable ends sure look alot like my Kawasaki cable. Anybody know if speedometers are fairly universal with respect to the cable receptor?
thanks,
eric

Any speedometer cable I have ever seen has the square end on the speedometer end. I was surprised to see that the lower end on my 650 it a round slotted gizmo, but the tachometer has the square on both ends.
Yes the cable should fit into that speedometer.
When I changed my speedo cable I just drilled a 1/8 hole in the end of the lower peice where the cable goes and soldered it on to a correctly cut length of universal speedometer cable for a car, that way I can easily unsolder it and solder it on to the next cable if I ever have to replace it again, the other end was already square to fit into the speedometer.

I have found out that there are different size collars that thread onto the sending unit and speedo. there are 10mm 11mm and I think 12mm.. the harley is probibly a standard size.
my cable is round slotted at one end and square at the other.

I have been considering swapping to a sportster front end so I can run a bigger tire.plus a diff head light. so the cable may not be a problem..
my top end is pukeing oil so this whole project may get deleted if I sell the bike..
this is my first kz and I love it..

Hi Jim, I hadn't even thought about the threads on the collar. I know the threads on the Kaw are bigger than a 10mm. I would guess 12mm based upon how large the existing speedo threads are compared to a 10mm nut I have for the headlight mount.
Would an HD ever have metric thread on any parts? I know some HD's have the 2240:60 ratio like the japanese bikes. but as I understand it, that's an american ratio based on 60MPH.

when harley was owned by AMF in the '70s the parts were made in japan ,, so there may be some metric hd stuff out there..
allways thought if was funny that the company of American Machine and Foundry, would be making americam harleys in japan

maybe that's why some HD's have the 2240:60 ratio.

All KZ'S and Z1's have a 1.5 to 1 ratio. The Harley gauge will not work accuratly.

This post has some conflicting information on the speedo ratio. kzrider.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&...=34123&catid=5#34123
I am also getting the 2240:60 info from www.oldbikebarn.com/Motorcycle_Parts/Speedometer
I guess we'll see. I've already ordered it and it should be coming next week. I'll mount it and let you know if its accurate.

Hi Jim, I mounted the speedo and its accurate to within 2 mph at 30 according to my neighborhood radar sign. Looks very cool too. The face illumination is a very cool blue and the LED's are bright. You need to run to radio shack and pick up a couple of rectifier diodes to hook up the turn signal indicator though. Don't know why they aren't included. They cost about a dollar for two.
