Coil Mod
23 May 2008 15:12
Does the tank have to come off for Wired George's coil mod?
I know it would not be any fun if it was easy, but does it have to be this much fun?

Well in order to do the mod you have to have access to the coils so yes. I guess you could trace the wiring back to someother place and connect the mod in there but I would be willing to bet it would be alot easier to just remove the tank and connect it directly to the coil. Is there some reason you don't want to remove the tank??

Not really. Just didn't know if I had to. And to be honest, FNG that I am, I was not exactly sure where the coils were. Found them though!
You wouldn't by any chance know what the "lug" is that I'm supposed to connect pigtail 87 would you?

The coils both have a red wire going to a dual connector.
Disconnect the 2 coil wires. You want these 2 red wires to go to lug #87.
Then the red wire you unplugged the coils from gets connected to lug #86.
The you just need a Power wire from the starter relay bolt, with fuse, connected to lug #36. And lug #85 gets grounded.
Here's a couple pictures showing how to do it:

Thanks for all the help guys. Somebody had already "fixed" the wiring, and that didn't exactly make my life easier but I got it done and it works. Runs better than it ever has. Thanks again.
