charging problem
18 May 2008 15:17
I have a charging problem with my 1980 kz650. What happens is it will only start with kick, the electric start will crank over once then give up, but when i ride it the battery doesnt drain or anything like that. The coils are fairly new from dyna and i have a dyna s in it too. I ordered a NOS stator for it, will this help recharge it? If not tell me what i should do.
Thanks

Existing stator may be okay. Insufficient battery charging could result from faulty wiring or a loose connector somewhere. Maybe a faulty rectifier or voltage regulator. Could be simply a weak battery, or battery that needs charging overnight, or fluid level in battery is low, etc.
Would also check for good solid ground connection where negative cable from battery attaches to engine or frame.
Would first test charging rate. At 3-4000 rpm, the battery voltage measured across terminals should be 14-15 volts.
Good Luck!

have you put a meter on the battery while running to see if it is charging or not, that should be the first thing to check

Will it turn over if you jumper the solenoid? If so, its time for voltage drop checks. Follow the starter power circuit (heavy cable) to the starter motor with the positive lead of your multimeter during a start request. You'll need to investigate any drop of 1 Volt or more.

used but work great, i'll sell them for half that.
i would also check the + cable
or maybe you just have a bad starter drawing to many amps.
the brushes do wear out over so many years.
