Hot Coils
12 Apr 2008 17:41
I was working on my 74 z1 and had the tank off while I was checking everything out. I accidently left the key on for about an hour and when I noticed it the coils were very hot. I did the direct relay last year and the bike ran fine. I never really checked the coils for heat, but I'm concerned something is wrong. Can anyone tell me if hot coils are a normal thing or do I have a problem.

If you left the key on and the rotor was in the position where it was charging the coil, surely it would get hot. If you’re lucky and didn't fry the coil, you should be OK. But don't do that again! It's not good for the coil or the battery.

So if the coils still generate spark I'm good? I haven't checked anything since I noticed the mishap, but I planned on firing the beast up this week. I will check for good spark this evening. Is there anything thin else I should be concerned with?
Thanks

Yes, the ignition points, leaving the coils powered up for that long is likely to burn the contacts on the points.
