Electric starter not turning engine over.

There's a Chris Rock bit where he says that you haven't loved someone unless you've thought about killing them. I love my bike but right now I want to hurt it.
I just today replaced an oil seal to stop a leak in the stator cover. I put the starter chain and flywheel back on. I accidently tried to start the bike while it was in 5th. The electric starter turned the engine over but then went clunk. Now when I push the starter button it sounds like the starter motor is just spinning. There's a whirring sound but the engine doesn't turn over one bit.
I have been able to start the bike with the kickstart. Did I break the starter?
