hi all you kz fanatics. well i just picked up my grandfathers 75 kz400s1. it was used its whole life as a farm bike. zipping into town and around the farm. and yup i used to ride it at age 10 around the farm. well its in rough shape as its been left un touched for a long time. well he recently passed and i drove the florida just to pick it up. got it home and i am begining to tear it down. i want this back on the road. my gramps lost the keys and the ignition tumbler is froze up. i want to know what wires to connect so i can begin working on it while i wait for my new ignition set and keys to come in. kind of hard to see if i can get a bike to run without spark lol. and help would be great.

There is a great website for KZ400 owners ( www.kz400.com ). On there, I was able to find links to a scanned-in shop manual for the KZ400. On page 191 is a wiring diagram. According to that diagram, to bypass the ignition switch, you will need to connect the brown to the white and red to the blue wires (two separate connections, not all together ;))

You should be able to find these wires coming into the headlight bucket.

Of course, keep watching EBay for a switch w/Key. According to the Kawasaki website, your model's same switch is used on these other model years:

KZ400 (1974)
KZ400-A1 (1977)
KZ400-A2 (1978)
KZ400-D (1975)
KZ400-D3 (1976)
KZ400-D4 (1977)
KZ400-S (Special) (1975)
KZ400-S2 (Special) (1976)
KZ400-S3 (Special) (1977)

Check Z1 enterprises. The sell replacement switch/key sets for about $15. If they have one to fit, it is so worth it not to have to screw up the wiring. The thing just plugs in.
