Hello,

I have recently started restoring my 1980 KZ750 LTD-2 (G1). I have the old engine with seized pistons and a newer engine with no charging system. I am trying to remove the old stator rotor but can't seem to make it budge. I am trying to get an impact gun tomorrow. Is there any trick or special tools to loosen the bolt and/or to get it off of the crank?

The wire harness is a nest of duct tape and crap wires so I am looking at a used harness from a 1979 kz750 twin be the same if not interchangeable?

Thanks,
Tyler

Hy Tyler, and welcome to the site. Our bikes are similar. I haven't tried to remove my stator, but the diagram looks as if you just remove the bolt holding it on. At that point, the tapered crankshaft end is held onto the stator w/friction(/rust). My guess is that if you soak it down w/a penatrating oil and then a bit of hammer tapping, it should just slide off. I had to do this same thing w/a buddies POS '74R90 BMW. I hope this helps eventhough it's just a guess.

On my old 76 twin I was able to use the rear axle to screw into the rotor and whack it with a hammer to get it off.
A piece of info I picked up on here a long time ago.

I hope you know the bolt that holds the rotor on is a left hand thread on the 750 twins?

After you get that bolt out, use the rear axle and screw it in as tight as you can get it, then smack the end of the axle good and hard with a large hammer, it should pop right off at that point. It's a taper fit, and as soon as you move that rotor .001" it will slide right off.

Do not under any circumstances hit the rotor directly, or you will more than likely be looking for another one.

The 79 wiring harness will work, if you get a 76-78 right hand switch pod you can hook up the on/off switch for the lights, if not then the headlight will come on when you turn on the ignition like it's supposed to on the 79 and later twins. I just prefer to be able to turn it off when I want.

While you have the rotor off you may want to consider rebuilding the starter clutch if you plan on using the electric start, I think a kit is available somewhere.

I have a spare 80 KZ750G that I am thinking about parting out, no tank/seat/sidecovers/tail though, those are on my 79 :)

The bolt is left thread? So I should be turning it to the right? I tried both ways with an impact gun. I will try harder if you say to turn it clockwise. IT would explain it's unwillingness to budge. You are a life saver with the harness confirmation. I am going to buy another harness then. I might be interested in some parts if i get this thing running to take to the DMV to have them inspect it and get some papers saying it's mine.

Thanks for the help.

SO i got the bolt off, of course it was left threaded. It took a torch and a fence post, but I finally got it. Thanks a lot for the help.

Place a moving blanket or large cushion under the rotor to catch it. Put a puller on the rotor, then pull it up as tight as you can get it. Then smack the center bolt of the puller with a hammer. The rotor should "pop" right off.
