Junp starting with a car battery
29 Nov 2007 12:39
Has anyone had any bad experiences jump starting with a car battery. I connected my main battery and ground cables to a car battery(without the motorcycle battery in) and started my 77kz1000. It ran for about 20 minutes and then I turned it off. When I tried to start it again there was no spark. The primary test on the 5 ohm NKG's is about 5.7 on both and secondary is about 18.2 on both. I haven't checked the condensers but, all other wiring and connections seem ok. I have another set, which I'm going to try this w/e.
Any ideas are appreciated.

As long as the car is not running, it should be ok to jump start the bike, but only if the bike's battery is connected or the car's battery stays connected.
If you started the bike and disconnected the cables without a battery in the bike, you may have fried some electrical in the bike. If a KZ is running without a battery or battery-eliminator (capacitor), the voltage pulses and this can burn things up.
I was considering posting a little write-up to illustrate why pulsed-voltage can burn up electrical systems designed for steady voltage if anyone is interested.

I really wouldnt do it. Maybe with the car off, or battery out of the vehicle. But not with the car running. I had to replace my Stator because the previous owner killed the battery from cranking after he put about 3 quarts of oil in the bike to much and fouled the plugs. He jumped the bike a few times and burned up the Stator.

If you have no spark, first place to check would be the fuses.
Next is check the voltage to the coils with the ignition on, and the kill switch in Run.

I have jump started bikes off of car batteries with no problems but always with a battery in the bike and the car shut off.but i have started and ran many bikes off a charger but never disconnected it while running so im not sure what might happen.
