Converting to kick only was created by ocularyss
I have a 77 kz 650 and I am planning on turning it into a bobber. I want to strip it down to the bare min. and simplify the mess out of it. I was wondering if any one could give me guidance on removing the battery to run the head/tail light and coils off the charging system only. I have heard from some that it is possible, since I have a kickstart, while others say I can't. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is not possible on a stock 77 650. That is the one year that uses an excited-field alternator.

It's possible if you convert the alternator and reg/rec to a 1978 650 system (or later).

However, you don't need much of a battery. I've wired a few KZ's with a small scooter battery. I used one from a Honda Spree 50cc (12v). They have them at some auto parts stores and are pretty cheap and small.

There is this item being sold on E-Bay called the Bat-Pac.

I thought about buying one for my Yamaha DT360 but haven't yet. He does list KZ's in his list of bikes this works on. Not sure though that you still wouldn't have to convert to a newer model rectifier/regulator as loudhvx points out. If you do look into getting one let me know how it works out.
