maybe wrong rotor
03 Oct 2007 19:35
I have recently taken ownership of a 1976 KZ750B1 which I thought had the right parts for the charging system in the crate. The charging system looks like it is from a B3/B4. When I go to put the rotor on and tighten the bolt it tightens the rotor and sprocket tight to the crankcase. I am wondering if the rotor might not be the right one or am I missing something here? Is there a way to cross reference the # stamped on the rotor to correct part # for this rotor?

Welcome to KZR!
Is it a Kawasaki part number on there?
(Post the number anyways.)

The rotor is a taper fit on the crank, if the rotor is sliding over the taper all the way to the case, then either it's not the right rotor, or it has been seriously damaged.
You do have the starter clutch sprocket all the way inside the starter clutch, right? And there are no washers between the starter clutch sprocket and the case (IIRC anyway).
If it was mine, I'd convert it to the B3/4 charging system, the B1/2 charging system is a PITA.

That's what were doing. We have the B3 stator and cover. I thought we had the B3 rotor. :pinch:
The stater clutch sprocket IS in all the way in on the stater clutch, and the manual shows a throw out washer inbetween the sprocket and the stater clutch.
The rotor does taper fit on the crank, but, I guess it goes about 3mm too far on. It seems to fit fine without the stater clutch sprocker on the shaft, But when the thing is put together, it is way too tight.
Some photo ID might help us out here. I have to get kzl6060 on that.

I have taken some measurements of 4 different points.
height of magneto is 40mm
height of magneto and starter clutch 59mm
height of magneto, starter clutch and sprocket is 64mm
the crankshaft sticks out of the crankcase 44mm
I can seat the magneto on the shaft fully if I leave off the sprocket.
If anyone knows the if these are correct dimentions for this would tell me for sure.
Thanks in advance for helping out the newbie:)

I think I figured it out. I bet the shaft is lathed down. should the tapered shaft come up to a lip or smooth with the diameter of the shaft??
Can you tell by this pic if it is worn?
Thanks

Are you guys anywhere near me? (see sig for location).
Yes that crank looks like it is damaged beyond economic repair, but if there is anyway you can get here (I'll be here Sunday all day), we can take care of that problem

Bringing the bike with you would be best, just the motor will work, or just stop by and pick up what you need to fix it (more than likely anyway). I need more room
