My 80 550LTD had pickup coils instead of points, from the factory. I don't have the wiring diagram on your 83, but I'll bet it has the same ignition as mine had, unless someone has changed it.
Either way, if you go to the Filebase and on the right side click on the coil power from battery link, you can download the instructions there. It is pretty cut and dried. Let us know what problems you are having doing the mod or understanding the directions... Someone here can help.
You could also shoot a picture of it (your ignition) and either post here or email it to me and I'll post it...
Do you have a shop manual?

That bike uses a reluctor-pickup assembly with a variable dwell (100 deg to about 120 degrees crankshaft) driving a transistorized ignitor. The ignitor uses ignition coils of about 2.5 ohms, but can handle coils with higher ohms.
Theoretically, the positive side of the coils can be wired permanently to the positive terminal of the battery with no switch at all. The ignitor doesn't give the coils a ground unless the engine is turning. But it's always safer to put a switch in line.
