Can anyone guess at what it will cost and where to find a starter for a 79 kz650?

Welcome to KZr Ouzts.

I don't know of anyone that rebuilds them, but that doesn't mean there isn't someone out there doing it.
If it just needs brushes and the armature isn't cooked, it's a simple enough job that you can do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined and have basic tools.

There are usually brush sets listed on eBay.
In fact, I bought a set just last week from a seller there ( greenoakmi ) for a whopping $14.94 including shipping!
They also have complete rebuild kits listed, so you might want to ask them if they have one for your bike that's just not listed on eBay yet.

Here's one from an 80. For $50.00. I don't know if it will fit though. I thought I saw a starter rebiuld kit inline, I can't find it now.
