just a last follow up, i finally got around to getting plugs, got em gapped and in and what a huge difference something so cheap can do
bike pulls very hard all the way to redline. i hadnt changed the plugs before but i had regapped and cleaned them when i had originally got the bike over a year ago. i had a lot of other problems and just didnt get to plugs, but what a difference a part thats one dollar and change makes. thanks everyone :woohoo:

Hope the good running continues. But if the same problem cylinder soot fouls the plug again, might want to check service fuel level in float bowl of carb to that particular cylinder (the quick easy clear plastic tube method). If fuel level is too high, the resulting richer mixture tends to foul the plug.

Hello, my bike had the same problem. After I cleaned and rebuilt the carbs, and adjusted the valves, engine was still erratic sometimes firing on all four, some times on only 3 or 2 cylinders, with popping through the carbs. I traced the problem to the wires going to coils, they were nearly broken.I also did the coil wiring mod.Its running great eversince.Hope this helped.

you mean spark plug wires or the actual wires going to the coil?

The wires going to the coil, supplying the power. They end up in a ring that screw onto the coils. When I inspected them visually they were ok,I discovered that they were nearly cut when I removed the wires from the coil to clean them up. Two of the wires (one on each coil)felt limp just right after the crimp that mounts it onto the rings. When I cut it open there were only a couple of strands of wire left connected.I decided to cut and replace all four wires going to the coils, just to be sure.
