Is it possible to repair the speedometer guage on my 81 1000LTD or is it a one time thing and throw away. I am so bummed right now, riding a fast bike and not knowing what speed I am at

I have a speedo of of my 80 KZ750 that I want to sell, if you're interested. 8,555 miles on it. Bad news is that it only goes to 85mph..

Give
Z-Resto a call
- probably cheaper and definitely a whole lot easier on the blood pressure than winding up with a lap full of gizmo parts.

Depends on what the problem actually is...
What are the symptoms? Is it dead, jumpy, or on/off all the time? There are a number of things that tend to go wrong with these setups. I've been through 3 pickups and 4 speedos for the same bike myself
Dead usually means dead, and beyond fixing. Do some checking though. You might just have a bad connection somewhere.
If the needle jumps, it could be that the needle is getting loose, and you'd have to take the whole thing apart (very hard to do as you'll have to pry it open) in order to even take a stab at fixing it. Get a used one off ebay (like buying a lottery ticket when it comes to electronic parts...).
It could also be a bad pickup (and this is very common). Take it off and see if it moves freely and that the receiver isn't worn or broken.
I'm sure some of the experts around here will know more about what can be done and not to fix your problem.

I'm sure I recall Wiredgeorge talking about prying a ring of some description off a guage not long ago.

Well I believe it is just dead, the only time the arrow bounces is when it get vibrations from the engine or the road. Thanks for the link PT. I don't know what to say Draco, aren't those gauges of a different design? Like the 70's style with the chrome egg shape? So you rebuilt your speedo already Kzrider? is it easy? I checked all the wiring that the clymer manual told me of... such as checking the orange wire from the odometer and thats good and checking battery voltage at the 6 wired connector at brown and black/ yellow wire and everything is good, so it all comes down to the speedo. We have a Kz graveyard here so I will check that out tomorow

nope, no chrome egg, it's got a flat back. It doesn't have any indicator lights at all, just the speedo.
Don't know if the wiring would match up, but that's all an easy fix.

Naaaa I rather stick with something that is meant for my bike Draco, I wouldnt want any endless wires for bulbs hanging around, but thanks though! I especially want my oil light on there!
