Battery leads?
20 Mar 2007 05:23
The wire going from my + battery terminal to the solenoid has this white with red striped wire that goes to the fuse box. This white and red wire has corroded and broken off. I stripped it back and wrapped it around the battery terminal bolt temporarily. I know that's not gonna last very long.
Anybody know where I can find new battery leads for my bike? I didn't see any on Z1 or Parts-n-more. I could just fab up a new one myself, but I'd rather just buy a new one if I can.

You might get lucky and be able to score a used wire lead on eBay, or simply check with a Kawi dealership near you to see if it can still be purchased NOS (Kawi p/n 26010-053). Be prepared though, it's probably going to be pricey!
Personally I'd try to find a new positive cable with the same fittings and length/gauge, then just get some new connectors and wire of the same gauge as the red/white main wire to the fuse box and crimp it on.
That way you'll know that it's all new and should last you another 25+ years.

Thanks Retro. I was kinda hoping for a universal type fit, but I guess I'll have to do the way you mentioned. Except I want to avoid having extra terminals stacked on my battery pole. I'll try to solder the wire onto the new cable and shrink wrap it all up real good.
I haven't been back to a Kaw dealer since he tried to charge me $19.00 for an oil filter O ring. I can only imagine what he'd want for a new battery cable.

Another tip:
Just get a FRAM or STP oil filter at an auto parts store (Auto Zone and Kragen have, or can get them) for about $5. They each include the o-rings.

You see a lot of people parting out bikes on ebay but they never include the batery cables. Probably dont think anybody wants them. Contact them and you could probably get 5-10 of them!

You're probably right Bluemeanie, but when it comes to electrical stuff, especially thirty year old battery leads, I'll just make new.
I just gotta remember which friend of mine it was that bought that aircraft electrical cable crimper.
And Retro, I saw Autozone had some bike filters last time I was there, but they didn't have the one I needed.
They said they'd order some though.

Re: Battery leads?

It lists for $20.78 which isn't all that bad. Also used on the 1976 KZ900LTD, 1977-78 KZ1000, 77-80 KZ1000LTD and the same era police models. It should be readily available through Kawasaki.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
