GPz1100 starter motor interchangeability

19 Mar 2007 17:56
#121705
How can I find out what starter motors are interchangeable with that from an '83 GPz1100? I understand there is a way to match part #s to all bikes they fit on kawsaki.com but I can't see how to do it. Or is it as simple as all 1100s use the same starter? Thanks

Foss...I'll check My cross-ref program here...

Also...I remember a while back, reading about a Honda starter bolting right into a KZ engine with a very slight mod.The Honda(CB model) starter is used by a lot of Racers, because it's a stronger starter(for turning over high compression engines). Not too sure about it mounting to a GPZ engine though...not sure of the differences between the 2 engines(KZ and GPZ).
Anyway,I'll have a look here and report back on the cross over...

Uncertain whether this procedure might in some way be beneficial, but here's one way to begin getting some info on supposed starter interchangeability. Hope it helps :)

The Kawasaki.com site parts diagram shows 1983 GPZ1100

Hmmm...it is interesting that the Zedder software includes KZ1100B1/2 as having the same starter yet the Kawasaki site does not.

Sandy and Patton, thanks very much for the help - that certainly will make it easier to pick one up. Sandy, I can copy it "my stuff" folder and blow it up to read it. Of course it will be easier after my cataract surgery on thursday!

...I remember a while back, reading about a Honda starter bolting right into a KZ engine with a very slight mod.

The starter from a CB750 twincam ('79-'82, not sure about other years) will fit and is definitely stronger..

The battery cable is a little closer to the sprocket side cover. I ground the cover down slightly near the cable to keep it from shorting out. All grinding was on the inside of cover, and is not visible on assembled bike.
