wiring guys i need help!!! was created by sbjones
ok people. i need help with this one.
i have a 1978 kz 650 that i am installing an 80 750. what i need help is this .
i need to know how to wire the igniter and the ignition system (had points now electronic) and also the alternator wiring. please help.
i do have both of the wiring diagrams, so if you could just explain what wires, that would be great.
thanks!!!!!!!

There may be differences in the alterantors. I don't know the 650 well but as I recall, some came with two wires out of the alternator and some with three. I would hold off for Loudvhx as he very likely knows the difference. ON the KZ900/1000 alternators, they have three wires coming off them regardless of the year (73-80) and which wire goes to which connector on the regulator/rectifier makes no difference. Some of the wiring from the alternator (or stator) is blue, red and yellow and some bikes have all three wires yellow. If you have a three wire type regulator/rectifier and the three wires are yellow coming out, and you have three wires coming of the donor bike alternator, they may connect but as I said, I would wait a bit to get this verified. As to the other reg/rec wires, there will be a black/yellow or black and that is ground. You will have a white/red or red and that is hot and you may have a brown. The brown provides dc TO the reg/rec so that it can adjust its voltage. Some newer reg/recs don't have this red wire and rely on feedback through the main power wire which will be white/red or just red.
Now to the ignition... the points ignition HAD black and green wires. The black wire came from the left hand set of points and went to the right hand coil as you sit on the bike. Black = 1/4 cylinders. The green is the 2/3 and goes to the left coil as you sit on the bike. A dual out connector on a points bike hangs over the valve cover. It is attached to a yellow/red wire. Some bikes have red wire (or pink?) attached to the dual out connector and these attach to the coils. These are hot wires. Some bikes have yellow/red wires coming of the dual connector and these attach to the coils and are hot wires. Doesn't matter which lug you connect the power wire to.
On an IC Igniter bike, they use the same wiring pretty much. The same color conventions hold. From pickup coils, black and green wires plus RED come up to a connector that plugs into the IC Igniter. Out of the IC Igniter, there is another connector. The wires are red, black and green and the red hooks up with 12VDC and the black and green are connected to the coils like the points ignition. There will be a yellow/red wire dangling above the valve cover and the two outs will connect to the coils as well. SOME 1000s bring a wire back to the battery box area and the hot goes through a ballast resistor to add some resistance and then back along the harness to the coils.

Just need to be clear on what you have:
Ingition:
Ignition pick-up unit from the KZ750?
Ignitor from a KZ750?
Charging:
Alternator/stator from a KZ750?
Voltage regulator from a KZ750?
If you have all of the above, simply follow the wiring system on the diagram for the KZ750. If you can get it, it would be easier to simply use the KZ750 wiring harness.
If you are missing any of the above, then you cannot make the components from your KZ650 work mixed with the KZ750 components. The systems are different, and not compatable. (Just to be clear, you must have either all KZ650 ignition components, or all KZ750 ignition components, to get the ignition system woking. And you must have all KZ650 charging system components or all KZ750 charging system compoenents for the charging system to work. )
The above is true since you have an early model KZ650. If you had a newer one (1980 and above, I think), then your KZ650 systems match the KZ750.

looks like i have the igniter. but i need the reg/rectifier for the 750.
i do have the 750 alt and pick up unit. i think that i didn't have the reg/rec that is where is was having a problem. i will find the stock reg and then it should be fairly easy.
thanks for all the help. i just started working on this thing again, ya know, lazy winter days. but then i also have a harley that i have been riding with the wife. i plan on putting the kz on the track, or selling it. not sure yet.
again, thanks

I would only add a couple things to what Apeman said, you probably want new coils to work with that electronic ignition. 3-ohm Dynas or Accels will work.
And you'll be adding wires to the harness for the alternator, ignition, etc. As WG said, I think the alternators are different. I think the 78 650 was a single-phase and the 750 is 3-phase, that means you'll need to add at least one yellow wire for the alternator. You may want to just consider making your own harness, if you have experience with soldering and making reliable crimps.
