Help! Instrument cluster needed!!!

Help!

I've got my new bike all ready for Spring...

I bought it a month ago, and I have completely gone through it already. I've redone the fork seals, checked compression, tuned the carbs, changed the oil and all filters, new silicone intake boots, new head gasket, new stator cover and gasket, etc....

Now I'm stuck... I can't seem to find an instrument cluster for my 83' KZ 1100 LTD shaftie. The cluster on my bike was thrashed when I bought it. Everything works except the speedo, but the entire housing is mangled. (The 1100 LTD has all of the instruments, turn signals, ets. mounted in a single housing.)

Anyone know where I can find a cheap replacement? I don't mind using something that wasn't designed for this bike, but I do want an all in one cluster if possible without spending a fortune......



BTW, I'm going to take her out for the first time ever tomorrow. This'll be the first day above freezing in nearly a month! I'll let you know how she rides soon enough!

Could be tough...not a whole lot of those bikes around.

I've tried searching eBay every day for the past month with no luck...

If this keeps failing, what are my other options? Can I use the instruments off of a different bike? What about the cluster from an early model Ninja or something like that?

Even if You don't see the exact item that You're after?...ask the Seller anyway...You just never know.

I don't know what else to recommend,Bud...no idea what would fit that bike.

Alright, after scouring every d&^%&*)(*#&$*& junk yard in the country (and 5 in Japan), I didn't come up with squat! The closest thing I found wasn't the exact assembly for my ride, and they wanted $300 for the thing on top of it!

I ended up buying an assembly from an 80's Vulcan instead. I ripped the harness off of the old cluster, and soldered everything in place. Surprisingly, almost everything works perfect! I promise to post pics soon... I do have a few questions though...

#1, the new assembly has a temp gauge in it as well. Is it possible to hook up a sensor to the oil res. to monitor this?

#2, the new tach is acting really strangely. The needle is generally correct, but it twitches around constantly. There is almost always a 1k variance in where the needle is pointing at any one time. Is there a way to fix this?

Is the tach cable driven or electric?

Shaftie! We have the same bike and my tach, even with the factory unit, does the same as yours. The needle moves all the time so you just have to guess when it's correct. You can rev to 4000 and it may sit there for a little bit then drop to 2 and then come back to 4 and then 3500 --- it's strange.

My entire cluser is noisy. The bike was wrecked somewhere in it's life and the last owner told me the cluster has been noisy since.

I hope to change my cluster to seperate gauges. I just hate to lose my fuel gauge. It and my Magna are the only bikes I own that have fuel gauges and I'm spoiled :blush:

I now know that finding a set of gauges at a salvage yard is a waste of time.... thanks for sharing that

I had to modify the wiring harness from a set of gauges off of a Kaw. Vulcan. The front wheel is the same size, so the speedo works perfect... gas gauge and all indicators work great too. The only thing that bothers me at all is the fact that the Vulcan assembly has a temp. gauge that I'd really like to use!

Next week when it's back in the 60's, I'll take her out and shoot some pics of the gauge cluster that I used.
