Sure appreciate some info. on correct set up of points in KZ650B 1977 Model. I am having a problem setting the gap in the two sets of points as it relates to the firing order of the engine. I am told the firing order is 1243 is this correct?,and if so ,when you see TF,and line up the F mark with corresponding mark where the points should open and send spark to the plugs is the points going to fire in the right order 1243? Confused Newfie!

Not sure if this will work but I scaned my manual. You got the firing order right. So hopefuly this works. If so glad I could help a fellow newfie out.

There will be a spark each time the 1&4 and 2&3 reach TDC and the points open.
As cylinder 1 is on it's compression stroke, cylinder 4 is on it's exhaust stroke. Both cylinders fire but only cylinder 1 is on it's power stroke and cylinder 4's spark fires but does not ignite an air fuel mixture.
Next time up, cyl.4 will fire on compression and #1 on exhaust.
Same thing happens with 2 & 3.

The points on the left will spark 1&4, the right side sparks 2&3. Check this link to set points.

Basically all you have to do is rotate the engine until the points rubbing block is on top of the cam (points are at there widest opening) adjust those points, then rotate until the other points are on top and repeat. Check you timing and ride!

I just read an article on points settings. After this procedure is done it tells me to now proceed to STATIC TIMING. Anybody know what this is, I don't? KZ650B1.

Static timing is when you take a 12v test light and monitor the voltage coming into the points for the spark trigger. You can use an ohm meter to do the same thing, but you don't supply voltage in this case. You bridge the ground and supply feed of the set of points you are working with, and rotate the engine clockwise (always clockwise) with the 17mm nut on the end of the crankshaft, until the "f" mark lines up on the advancer with the pointer, as seen through the hole on the points plate in the upper left on the points plate. When the light comes on, with the 12v method, or the state changes from 0 to 1 with an ohm-meter, the "f" mark should be aligned with the pointer. You can set each point plate individually.

If the bike is running right now, I would suggest only doing one side, then starting the bike to make sure you got the one side you just worked on operational. If you make a mistake, it's easier to fix only the problem on the side that you just made a mess out of.

:woohoo:

I installed two new sets of points and condensor's. The set on the left 1&4,seems ok when the engine is turned c/w,it is almost dead on,but keep turning c/w till the 3&4 set opens and the test light comes on, when you look in at the marks the F mark will not line up. I think it's gone past the mark about one eight 0f an inch. What am I doing wrong with the adj. on 2&3 points on the plate? I tried to start the engine, but it only spits out the carbs.and backfires in the mufflers.Cams are set right and I did a compression test this afternoon, all four cyl's showing a little over 150 lbs.

You are really close. Rather than try to move the point plate itself, try opening the gap on that set of points just a little bit. It will cause them to open sooner, and maybe that will bring them into line.

By the way, the one side of points fires 1-4, and the other side of points fires 2-3.

I don't understand your last line. I thought that as the points cam turned it opens the first set firing #1 cyl.,then the second set firing #2cyl.back to first set firing #4 and then on to second set firing#3. The points can't fire twice on the one set of points when on the highest point of the lobe, can they?

Sorry to make things confusing. Of course you are correct. One set of points per 2 cylinders. I had referred to your earlier post where you indicated 1&4, and then right after that, you referred to the other set as 3&4. I called them sides, as in left side of the point plate, and right side of the point plate.

But just to make things even more interesting, the high point of the lobe triggers both 1-4, and then rotates 180 and fires 2-3. It's called a waste spark system, because the extra spark on the cylinder not on compression is lost electrical energy. The bikes use 2 siamese twin lead coils to fire 4 plugs.

Now that I've cleared that up, I hope you have an easy time getting the bike running.
