kz 1000 ign swap question was created by djnubz
is it possible to just swap the ignition from a 81 kz1000 to a 77? If so can I keep my stock coils?

I am not sure if a 81 1000 has the same ignition system as the 81 750 but i put the 81 kz 750 ignition system on my 77 1000. I used the 81 coils also. The only thing I had to make was a new backing plate for the pick-up coils to mount on my bike. Works good.

J or Z 1000s' and 900s' they interchange freely points to electronic or vice versa. I keep a points set up in the saddle bag in case of ign. brain failure
750 to 1000 needs a bit of modification of the crank pick up backing plate

so I can get an electronic ignition to replace the points on my 77 kz1000 from a 80 kz1000. Awesome. Do I have to swap the coils as well?

dont have to but if you want to yes
I like the coils that the wires are removable.
as long as there are two primary leads(small)
and two secondary leads (big)
they'll work a ok.
the brain from a kz 750 hooked to the pick ups off of the kz 1000.
then the box to the coils can even keep black as 1,4 and green as 2,3

I would swap coils as well as swapping the ignition IF the ignition came from a bike that used a inline ballast resistor to power the coils. In this case, the coils will be lower impedance so you would have to use the ballast resistor and the coils or not use the ballast resistor and stay with your old coils (the 77 had 3 ohm coils).
