A lesson in the obvious
I've finally tracked down the problem I've been having since I got my bike back together.
She would start and ride great, strong through the power band. Then all of a sudden she'd bog down, sometimes I'd be able to ride through it but sometimes.
I couldn't. Power would die, couldn't get it to rev, it would just hang around 2Krpm and die. Then I'd kick it and it would work great until it started to run
crappy again. Seemed like a carb problem...tore down the carbs and checked them out, everything in specs, no crud. Then noticed that when it ran crappy the lights
dimmed, sometimes if I turned on the turnsignals it would run good, then go into it's tantrum again. Started thinking electrical. Replaced: igniter, reg/rec and
ignition switch and found several loose connections. Each time I thought I'd finally
fixed it only to find that I hadn't.
Got depressed.
Finally, a couple of weeks ago, when I was watching bikes go by w/the riders wearing shorts and T-shirts, I replaced the stator. When I put it in, I noticed, the leads had cracked insulation. I put shrink tube on them, at the time, but I was suspicious of a
possible short. Still didn't work. The next day, as the weather changed into crap, I
decided to do this in a logical way. By this time,I was convinced that the problem was in the charging system, possibly a ground problem, because I could unplug the charging connection and run on battery, w/o a problem. Start the bike w/the connection unplugged,
bike ran fine, plug it back in, it ran crappy and died. I then left the plastic 3 prong connector, connected and unplugged the separate single black/yellow wire going into the harness. I found it ran fine w/the black/yellow wire disconnected but ran crappy and
died when it was plugged in. Started to look around and noticed that the short black/yellow
wire connected to the negative side of the battery was unplugged. And then what should
I find...a very short black/yellow wire comming out of the harness. DUUUUUUUUUUUH!!!
The moral of this story...MAKE SURE YOUR GROUNDS ARE CONNECTED!!!!!
She's running fantastic now...But winter has finally arrived...
CRAP!
