I don't see how the air jets come out? There's a row of three either pressed or screwed in the blank face below the choke butterfly, but none have a screwdriver slot.

Anyhow, yesterday I adjusted the valve clearance (was at the low end of the range), chain tensioner, points gap (was very low), and the timing was correct. I also charged the battery overnight.

The weird thing is that now the bike has no problem getting to 8000rpm in 1st or 2nd. The air temperature here is upper 30s, but it's been this cold before. I'm not sure it's pulling as strongly as it should, but it feels equal anywhere above 3000rpm. It now wants to idle that high constantly, though.

The only thing clearly out of spec was the points - that can't have been it, can it ?
