Mikuni VM26SS fuel mixture or air mixture screw? Which is it?

As you have the carbs with the screw underneath, don't worry about other types, screws should be around 1 an 1/4 turns out, this is about right for the pilot circuit, to slightly richen screws go out, to weaken turn in slightly. This does not richen and weaken through the whole rev range.

To be strictly accurate it does although hardly noticeable as a percentage.
Overall fueling is a stack up of all the circuits put together so any increase or decrease in fuel metered by the pilot screw will be added or subtracted from the total amount received elsewhere.

K.I.S.S. is a good theory, but your advice is off 180 degrees. The air/fuel mixture screw on the bottom of the carbs is turned OUT to richen, (more fuel and air) and IN (less fuel and air) to lean the idle circuit.
