Kz400 LTD airbox was created by robhartle82
In the middle of a rebuild on a 400 LTD and am really confused about the airbox/ air filter. Where does the filter fit in the box? Or does it hook into the back by the battery where the two rectangular holes are? There's no way to actually place the filter in the airbox. And before you say it, I'm committed to not using pods on this one. Thanks for any help.

It would be helpful if you were to show the YEAR of your bike. The best way is to show the year and exact model in your signature line. That way you don't need to add it every time you post. Ed

Keep in mind that Kawasaki started making the KZ400 bikes in 1974 and made them for 10 years. So it is quite likely that airbox changes were made along the way.

Here's the airbox diagram for the 79 400-H1 Ltd. I have no idea if this is what you have. Keep in mind that the airbox cap is old & possibly fragile. Also, I believe this is a type of airbox cap that can be installed wrong & not securely. I think it's supposed to fit into a groove or grooves in the airbox.

According to Partzilla, the 1974-75 KZ400D used this air filtration system-

The 1976-77 400D used this quite different system--

The crossover chart says that the second type was also used on the 400A and 400S through 1977.

The 1979 400H1 came with yet another arrangement.

The 1979 400B2 came with this completely unique system

The 440A, D, G came with this very familiar lookin air filter assembly, but with a different part number than the similar-looking 400 model.

If the LTD is the H model, then the filter goes into the smaller part of the air box that bolts to the upper rear part of the main box.

It should be pretty obvious where the air filter goes, so the airbox cap may be missing.

Indeed. I apologize for getting so carried away, but I was bored and easily got sucked into discovering how many variations there are in the 400/440 line.

Thanks guys! Yeah it's a 79 H1 and indeed I am missing the cap. Any ideas on where to find one?? Got nothing on eBay as far as I can tell.

Based on conversations I have seen here, that part of the air box is pretty hard to find. Should you get a useable one, you will then be faced with designing your own filter as the original has been nla for a while. If you can come up with a workable solution, 400/440 owners (at least some of them) will sing your praises for years to come.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationHere's a reproduction air filter cap kit for the 440 Ltd. should be the same as the 400H Ltd.
Kinda pricey, but probably worth it & includes the air cleaner case plus a couple of oem air filter elements.
I would ask what type of plastic it is & what production process was used, so that you can assess how durable it will be.
ps: see reply by Grcko on next page. he has a cap you could get.
