Air pods

Hey guys. Quick question here. I’m looking to switch over to pods on my stock carbs. I’m aware of the rejetting required and am currently running 4 into 1 Vance Hines pipes.

Does anyone know what style carbs come stock on a kz1000a2. I can’t find this info anywhere. I’m buying K&N pods. Also is there a benefit of running oval pods vs tapered. Just looking for some advice here. Thanks in advance.

The stock carbs will be Mikuni VM26 round slides with a 44mm OD carb mouth diameter for mounting the pods..
Either style pod will be ok and is down to personal preference as long they are good quality free flowing K&N etc as you state you are buying although oval pods will most likely have a larger surface area for filtration so may be marginally better and have a longer service life..

I had somebody tell me there 28’s as well. I guess my concern is that they are NOT stock. Are they stamped somewhere with a ID or model number. I have included photos too.

Measure the inside bore of the carb on the side that fits in the inlet rubber on the engine.
26's measure nearly 27mm and 28's closer to 29mm.
They look like z900 a4 26's from the pics but it's hard to be 100% because on the angle of the pics.
There is a number stamped on the flange near the choke plunger but they differ from one set to the other and probably denote factory batch number, year, model etc.
I have sets from the same model , year etc and they all have different numbers.
If you are going pods and maybe a different exhaust the carb model doesn't matter but 28's would be the better carbs to have.
All these Z1000 engines are the same spec , valve size , cam timing etc and the carb jetting is only different from model to model because of variations of airbox , exhaust and on some to comply with emissions restrictions.
Once you change any of that the" original" carb spec means virtually nothing.

I respect your input on this.. Europe seems to have finer parts than USA, And definitely the UK usually have very fine points I just hate the boat ride on the pond.

I'd be careful about getting parts for your "stock" bike... I see a black petcock and a Z1 tank... You might want to post pics of the bike... You might not have what you think...

I did post pics??? And showed concern for it not being stock. You even referred to my photos. What other photos would be useful?

Start by looking up the frame and engine serial number at a site called Zedder.com... look for "bike Info" and scroll down till you find the 900 and 1000 info section...Click on different models and compare serial number ranges... If you have a side profiles of the bike would help....

I agree with Zed1015 those look like 76-77 KZ900 carbs... Good job on cleaning them... looking good

You need to measure ID of the engine side of the carbs.

26 or 28mm doesn't matter, they both use the exact same size pod filters. I've had 200,000 or more miles on pods, and would not recommend them unless original parts are destroyed and no longer available.

Would the size of filter be 44mm??
