Another thing to watch out for is when installing the filter into the hard plastic airbox, the paper element could be damaged by the sharp edges on the sides. I cut some strips of cardboard (cereal box) and pushed it in with the filter. Then just pulled out the strips leaving the filter. Watch that the sharp edges front and back don’t damage the foam seal on the filter. It’s a tight fit all around. Good luck.
I have a Z1 airbox on my KZ1000.

If you're going from pods to an airbox you are going to love it!
Also, be sure to place a bag or something over the intake before you wash your bike.

I know this thread is a few months old now. I have the US version (1976 KZ900) and I was wondering how this all turned out on the Z900? I know the KZ900 had the rare, unique airbox that is just about unobtainable at this point. I am restoring the bike now and will probably start off with the pods but I think the airbox is more practical. I’m not opposed to that Z1 airbox if it will be a decent fit. I know they changed battery boxes, side covers, etc. in those bikes so I’m just checking to see the issues that may come up. If you have any photos, minus the side covers, of the installed unit it would be appreciated. Thanks.

You shouldn't have any problem fitting a Z1 air intake onto a KZ900. I installed one on my 1980 KZ1000 with no issues. But for clarity, I think the photos Scirocco showed are of a Z1, not a KZ900. And an early Z1 at that by the look of the ribless carbs.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.
