Have you try a vaccum sync of the carbs? If one or two carbs are off the bench sync a vacccum sync will tell the truth.

Well, I figured it out... sort of. Today I pulled the carbs, inspected throttle return spring, checked the slides weren't hanging, checked the air vents; the cables were routed a little funky, re-routed them, checked the idle adjuster and loosened it to the max, put it all together and no more hanging idle. I took it for a little ride around the neighborhood and could tell the difference right away. Only thing was, the idle was set too low. Got home, started playing with the idle adjuster and realized that was somehow the culprit all along. It's very touchy... I'd turn it a little... nothing, little more, slight increase, move it a little more it would jump to 3gs and would stick when I increased the throttle. After playing with it a while I found a sweet spot around 12 to 1300 where it would idle OK and wouldn't hang up. Tomorrow I'm going to take a closer look at the idle adjustment. It's still not right... if I adjust the idle to about 1500 it will start hanging up.. Granted, that's too high anyway but idle should never hang up. At least the bike's ridable again. So.. if this rings any bells or anyone has any ideas or insight, I'd love to hear it as I'm still not sure what's going on here.

When was the last time you cleaned and lubed the mechanical advancer?

I'll try that. I've tried about everything else.
