Have long believed the same (that OEM carbs are zinc), and that Mikuni smoothbores are aluminum.

I did the same thing to my carbs, I boiled them in water and pinesol, they turned like a chalky dark color, anyway I then scrubbed them with wd40 and a toothbrush, worked great! Brought the color right back.

With pinesol you just soak them. No water or heat needed.
