If the hoses are all stiff and hard then I have had good luck using a hairdryer set on high to warm up the rubber and makes them plyable again.

Isn't the heat trick just a temporary fix for removal & installation of stuff?
I used hot water on a duct to make it soft for re-installation,
but it hardened again after it cooled down. doh.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

I remember reading somewhere here that you can soak these hard rubber in a solution of ( I cant remember what ) and it will make them soft and pliable again.

Xylene & mineral oil or maybe wintergreen oil. ???
Not the xylene concoction, but I've done long term tests w brake fluid, pine sol, stp leak stop, & a few others --- the rubber softens some, but re-hardens within days.

I tried that in that past, is not worth the effort, the boots where not that expensive from partzilla and find wintergreen oil made me drive a lot and spend a lot of time. And as Martin said they will harden within a few days and the bike smells weird.
Warming them up and a lot of patience works the best.
