Can someone with a 77-78 kz1000a model post a pic of the stock airbox? I'm just about to get back to working on the 78 I have and one thing I want to do is turf the pods it has on it and get a proper airbox on it, I just don't know which one I should be looking for.

This may help, unfortunately you are not the only one looking for one.

Seems like more and more are wanting to go back to the stock airbox setup. So what happened to all the airboxes people took off? They just threw them away? I can't understand that. I always save every part I take off of anything just incase. Guess I'm a hoarder.

I can get some airboxes for KZ1000's, I've seen several at the local scrap yards. Problem is that they are usually missing the cap (11), inside wire mesh baskets (9,10) and the flange (8) that holds the boots on. The flange could be made out of aluminum. But the baskets are the part that the bolts (6,7) thread into to hold everything in place.

The crank case vent tube is also usually missing. (18)

The silencer (15) and everything with it....I dunno....never seen one. I'll get you a photo of some of these parts posted here soon.

Here's a pic of most the stuff you need. I put two air boxes in there to show you different views. You also need 2 wire mesh baskets, (there is a left and a right) the flange (broken in this pic), 2 drain caps, the crank vent tube (not shown) and a filter cap. Tubes and filter are available from Z1E.

I had to buy three airboxes to get all the parts I needed. It took me a while to track all this stuff down.

Thanks everyone, I will have to keep my eyes open for one or three I guess. In the mean time I'll have to resort to new pods I guess, at least it ran fairly well with them when I got it running at the end of last summer. Will start digging in the meantime, would the main part of the airbox suffice? Say attaching a big k&n pod over the opening that the snorkel would mount too?

The filter that goes inside the airbox is available from Z1E. That gives you the resistance needed to make it run right with stock jets.....I think. I am missing the snorkel, which may add some resistance, so I went 1 size over stock. I'm also at sea level so I knew it wouldn't hurt either way.

But you need the flange (#8) to hold the boots to the airbox. You could probably do without the screens but you would need to use larger course thread screws to hold the flange/boots to the box. The larger wood type screws could just screw straight into the airbox. But if you find a box, hopefully they have the parts with it. I wasn't that lucky so I ended up buying three to get one complete set. One had this and the other had that.

I'll try to make a trip to the local scrap yards in the next month or so. Been too busy with work this year to make the time to do it. But I've been wanting to go. I know one of the places has at least a few of the boxes, and they must have the other parts somewhere.

Now that I know what to look for I'll try to find at least a few complete sets if I can. The first few times I went I didn't even know what all parts I needed. And the places have everything thrown all over the place and nothing labeled. Drives me crazy that they will break parts down to the last nut and bolt. Why cant they at least leave assemblies like the airbox together?

I was looking for a headlight assembly for my Yamaha Enduro, needed the whole thing, bucket, bulb, ring, and adjuster. You would think they would keep that together...nope. Pile of buckets here, rings over there, bulbs over there....and so on. Impossible to find a complete assembly that goes together unless you really knew exactly what all the parts were. I didn't, so I gave up and bought one on a forum.

Sorry about the rant...... :S

Anyhows....I know exactly what all parts are needed for a 77-78 KZ1000 airbox so I know what to look for. If I can find a few complete sets or even partials I'll let you know. There are other members looking too.

That would be great, I need to check a couple of the local suspects around my way as well. There's always a chance they'll have something in the parts bins. Plus I need to hunt for a set of spoked wheels for my wife's cb650, just haven't found the spare time to get out that way.

Will the airbox off a kz900 work? Im not to sure if the 900 and the 1000 have the same carb spacing, if so I might have a line on one.

Check out these posts by wiredgeorge:

I LIKE using a Z1 airbox with a K&N filter on any of my bikes. There is TONS of room on both the LTD and A...

I have the same Z1 airbox on my 79 KZ1000E1 shaft.

On my personal ride, a 79 KZ1000E1 shaft, I use VM26 carbs which are a bit heavier than 29s and use a Z1 airbox which is probably a bit heavier than pods. The Z1 airbox just sits out there without support. The weight does cause me worries so I took a loop of wire and wrapped the wire around the airbox and frame to support it.

When we were kids (Ha) 35 years ago. Those damn air boxes were so hard to take out! You had to take the carbs off the rubber manifolds, you had to loosen the battery box, move everything around!
I used to take and cut them in half! Right down the middle! Just so I could put K/N air filters on them! That's why they are scarce! Everyone cut them in half. Just to pull them out! There is your answer!

Hey Patton do you have a link to any parts fiche? It turns out the unit is off a 77 kz1000b1 ltd, am I correct in thinking it should fit my 78 kz1000a2? I'd like to cross ref it and double check.
