I think 1104 was discontinued because of lead (?) content?
It looks like 1194 isn't made anymore either (replacement for 1104).
Looks like 1184 is the replacement for 1194? I'm really confused...too many numbers.

Well, it looks like success, however, I just can't understand it!.
Gd4now, asked "Did I bench check the carbs". I thought I did, I always, after checking that the slides will close down to no gap, then, from the engine side use four 3/16" balls to see if they will all fall thru the carb throat simultaneously.
I realise this is only a physical (dimensional) check and a vacuum gauge is needed to finally tweet them to be perfectly balanced. However, I have done many carbs this way and they have always been within a division on the "cm of Hg" scale, without resorting to the vacuum gauges.
MtKawboy told me (in essence) that they are a great carb and to have faith something else is incorrect and probably not the needles. Also, this is worth while repeating... You cant outjet a vacuum leak
I got Black Z1R & DD message a bit late as I had already purchased the Red Silicon Sealant and used it.
I checked the vacuum with my "Carbtune" manometer and found, to my surprise, that the vacuum was indicating a difference of some 12 cm of hg, two carbs were reading low and 2 (of the interconnected carbs) were way up.
How did they get this far out? I might have to ask Wg about this. Anyway I brought the carbs back to "sync" and the Z1 sailed up the slope..... Thanks everyone.
How could these two Z1 Carbs get so far out from the other two?
Regardz

Thanks Dale, Do you think it could be one or two of those felt washers that would cause such a difference in the vacuum?
I will PM you re-felt washers, I just need to think about it a bit longer! These carbs were perfect wrt the ball bearings, yet, were so far out when checked by vacuum gauge
RegardZ.

The early carbs have a different & primitive setup for adjusting that then the later ones. Thats why it was chnaged in the second series of carbs. As to how they got that far out, who knows maybe the screw turned too much when someone tightened the nut. Glad you got it fixed anyway. I dont claim to be any sort of expert on these carbs but Ive been working on them since I had my brand new 73 Z1, 39 years ago. Im old !

IIRC on some of the early 28s the sync for # 4 can not be adjusted (without altering it) and you are supposed to adjust the other 3 to it.

My brand new 73 Z1 ran 12.19 @108.95 so that should be enough to climb a driveway. Doesnt sound like much today, but that was a rocketship in its day

24 Mar 2012 23:38I agree with that ET and MPH. My good friend had a '73 that ran the exact same numbers.mtkawboy wrote: My brand new 73 Z1 ran 12.19 @108.95 so that should be enough to climb a driveway. Doesnt sound like much today, but that was a rocketship in its day
