I had been going through this over the summer. I have the 82 K2 LTD 1000, which has basically the same 4 gallon tank that the P model has, different paint scheme.
I tried a couple of larger tanks, before making just a couple of mods to fit a 81-83 Shaft Drive A1/3 tank on my bike. It is slightly longer, and I had to shorten my seat to fit it. But nearly a bolt on otherwise. $120 shipped in 9.8 out of 10 condition. So 5 gallons instead of 4 is possible.
