Stock jet sizes for BS38 on a 76 KZ750 Twin
03 Apr 2011 22:57
I just got this 76 KZ750 twin with BS38 carbs. Can anyone tell me the stock main and pilot jet sizes for these carbs so I know whether to go up or down on the jets? The guy that had it before me was running it on half choke (I think to compensate for taking the baffle out of the pipe). It ran ok, but was dumping out fuel from various places and the plugs seem to be a little on the rich side. I believe it currently has a 125 main jet, 45 on the pilot and clip is set at #2 position.

79 specs for the BS38s are 125 main, 40 pilot, 50 starter (the one in the bowl) and the third slot for the needle clip.

Ok, I only found two in the bowl. One on the inside (pilot jet) and the one you access from the screw on the outside on the bottom of the bowl (main jet). Where is the starter jet you're referring to? Got any pictures that identify them? I don't have a manual yet. Also, it seems strange someone would have went up from a 40 to a 45 on my pilot jet without first changing the main from a 125 to at least a 130 don't you think?

I thought that was the pilot jet (as I found on the attached diagram #63).

The '79 KZ750 twin uses the same BS-38 carbs and the stock main is 125 and the stock pilot is 45. And it runs a lot better with a 50 pilot. I suspect those values will work well for your engine. The '79 has a five slot needle and stock position is the center.

04 Apr 2011 16:22The jet on the top of the bowl is the pilot. The main is at the bottom just above the drain screw.

Re: Stock jet sizes for BS38 on a 76 KZ750 Twin
04 Apr 2011 16:25The only '79 750T that came with a 40 pilot stock was the California version and it ran TERRIBLE... guess how I know. All other versions came with a 45 pilot and I have always found 50 runs better even with stock pipes.Rainman wrote: 79 specs for the BS38s are 125 main, 40 pilot, 50 starter (the one in the bowl) and the third slot for the needle clip.

Thanks. I'm thinking of bumping her up to a 50 pilot and a 130 or 135 main with pods and the open headers.

I have never run pods but ran some high performance headers for a while that dialed in right with 130 mains. Open pipes and pods probably need at least 135 mains but I would keep the stock airbox if possible.

If I keep the stock airbox and just run the open header and a 50 pilot, what size main should I go with and where should I set my clip?
