Re-Jetting, Pods back to stock air cleaner
16 Dec 2009 08:52
The carb rebuild kits came in the mail and I need a break from polishing, so it is time to tear down the carbs.
I want to reinstall the stock air cleaner on a 77 c1 I just bought and disassembled. I have not yet seen this engine run, so I don't know how well the current jets are working..(I don't even know which ones are in now).
Which jets are recommended for a bike with a kerker pipe and stock air cleaner.

Off the top of my head I'd say 15 pilots/105 mains and the needle clip in the fourth groove (counting from the blunt end of the needle) would be close.

Wha? why lose the pods?
Unless you really want to go slower and decrease your fuel economy, then I understand.
Are the pods rotted?

In general, pods don't perform as well as the stock air box. Obviously, there are differing opinions, but do the search and judge for yourself the disadvantages vs perceived advantages. Ed

My other 77c1 has pods on it. I have always noticed them when I see the bike in profile. It seems to me that there is this gaping hole in the profile that is filled by the pods, it is like a declawed cat's paws -- not natural, the hose clamps remind me stylistically of duct tape. I've had the same feeling about 60 - 70s American muscle cars aircleaners.
I feel that the look of the stock airbox is tight, follows the lines of the original design, flows so well with the side covers, looks complete and, finally, I am not convinced that it really offers that much of a boost to power as to warrant having them.

So... your saying pods reduce performance?
People put them on thier bikes to go slower??
I guess velocity stacks are uh to reduce velocity...
I've seen the difference with dyno mapped jetting, and pods can add a TON of power to just about any properly setup bike. (In the old realm of bikes)
Just searching the forum for a bunch of guys that couldnt jet a bike and went back to stock, isn't exactly an unbiased solution to this equation.
Personally, I don't care either way you go. I have a bike with pods, and one without for exactly the same reason... the look.

ZRX1200R - 112 h.p. stock
130 h.p. with pods and aftermarket exhaust
but I do run a stock air box with a K&N on my KZ1000st
just depends on what you are after

There is enough info in the archives without re-hashing this again for the millionth time. Do your homework. Most of the time the switch to pods were because the owner likes the look or is sick of trying to get the carb bank in or out of the bike. New boots removes this last concern. Just remember do not destroy your airbox taking it out or you burn your bridge. Seriously do a search before deciding. And be prepared for some exaggerated claims. Along with some sound advice. From both sides.

Hi gang, let me say I did a airbox mod that gets you all the air your engine can used and keep the stock airbox. No problems with pods and crosswinds or rain this way.
78 KZ 650B2. Vetter faring, Dyna S, Dyna Green coils, WG coil mod,AGM Battery, VM26SS carbs, Pilot jet 15, mains 110, jet clip #2 shimmed position, Modified stock air box, stock air filter, Kerker 4 into 1 with stock baffle. currently 48,785 miles.
and climbing daily.

Did you get the jets figured out for your airbox mod. I think of it from time to time. Did you notice an increase in power? Did it lean the hell out of your bike?
