Decided I would ride to the office this morning. Got ready, walked to the garage, put the choke on (was near the freezing mark), push the starter button, and she fired up. But she the idle wasn’t going any higher than when the engine is hot. I thought it was supposed to make the engine run at higher RMP. It stalled so I restarted the engine and I had to twist the throttle just a tiny bit so it wouldn’t stall.

I get the bike out, close the garage door, and when I try to leave the house, blaah! Died! Won’t start again! So I do everything I can, loose the choke, verify that the petcock is in the ON position... Still won’t go! I look around to see a spring on the street! Gee, this piece looks like it’s 31 years old! That would mean that it came off of MY bike! Ouch!

The spring is 3/4 inch long, O.D. is 5/16th, i.d. is 7/32. Any Ideas? At first I thought it was the spring for the idle screw, but after looking in the Clymer manual, there seem to be a few of these springs on the carb assembly.

I’m lucky that I noticed this right away, other wise I could of never figured it out!

Help!:side:

I'll bet that the screw from your choke lever fell out too...take a look. There's a spring in behind it as well, and MY guess is that's where the spring came from??.

It would explain the hard starting.

So I might be missing a screw also! Great! Well, maybe it's sitting on the engine cas or something.... I'll look again in the street in front of the house tonight.

AHH! pics! Of the bike, no not yet, digital camera sent to be repaired.... hopefully they won't be able to fix it and we'll get new one, we hated this one... ooops, we're deviating!

Pics of the part, nope.... I'll hunt down a parts diagram and post it here....

Anyway, replaced the spring where it goes, but I have NO idea what it's purpose is, other than making a constant tension on part X. I guess screws couldn't do!

I'll get back to you on the parts diagram.

So it's not coming from the choke system. Good! And she started right up.... wonder if it had anything to do with that? I think I was just trying to roll to quickly, without leaving the engine time to warm up properly... What should be the average warm up time on one of these?

That's the spring I found, and when I looked around, there was nothing in the hole that obviously the spring went! So I put it back. Anyone knows what this part does?

Nope, it's on the other side (front) of the carb assembly, and the spring fits in a hole on top, where there is like a block of aluminum and the throttle cables holder is screwed into. Does is make any sense or?

The way part #20 holds it in the hole I always figured it was a strain relief for the cable when you suddenly cracked the throttle wide open.
Parts 18 and 19 is the throttle stop, if you watch it when you open the throttle hard and try to open it farther that setup compresses and helps take the strain off the cable itself.

Ahhh...pretty sure you're talking about here.
The spring is missing on this set of carbs, but it's there to dampen the throttle cable tension.
Without that spring, you'll probably have a bit of play in that part of the linkage.

Hmm, did not think about that, but it makes perfect sense. Though I doubt that's the reason it wouldn't start... Maybe I'll never get to know!
