Okay, problem solved. Anybody want to guess? I'll give you a hint. What's different about carb #3?

Give up? #3 has the vacuum port that drives the petcock. My petcock diaphragm has a very small hole in it but it was big enough to flood that cylinder until the throttle was open. Sheesh. I feel dumb.

Next problem. Ignition signal on #2,3 goes away sometimes. Comes back after fiddling and swearing. I don't think either the fiddling or the swearing has anything to do with it, though. Could it be that the pickup sensor gets heat soaked? I notice that if I pull off the cover it seems to work better.

Make sure nothing is touching the inside of the cover. ;)

P.S. Don't get an aftermarket diaphram, get an OEM one from Kawasaki ($11-$12) Trust me! If you use the same one as my 650 they still make them. The 1000P used them up till 2005.

No, nothing touching. Looks like new in there. Just thought that if heat is an issue, having the cover off might help.

What about repairing the diaphragm with a very thin layer off fuel-resistant RTV?

Edit: Just found a thread on the board about an intermittent ignition problem that sounds exactly like mine, i.e. temperature-related. Turned out to to be a pickup coil. So it's off to ebay again.

No, you will spend more time experimenting and finding that it does not work. It's possible I guess but for $12 it's fixed right! I realize money can be tight and waiting a week for part (If out of stock) is a PITA but will be fixed first time!

Perhaps internal frayed wire in battery voltage feed to coil or in connection between right-side ignition module and coil.

Could check continuity with ohmeter while manipulating wire. :)

Hi Patton,

That's the best explanation I've ever read on the pilot circuit.

You're definitely hittin on all four!

Guess we all should feel that way as nobody else thought to check it either.
Surprised you didn't have a flooded cylinder and gas in the oil. I just switched to a Pingel and got rid of the vacuum issues all together.

If it is in that part of the circuit my guess would be in the wires from the pickups to the igniter. You might have to remove and unwrap them to find the fault. Not saying it couldn't be heat related to the pickup, just saying the wiring on these old bikes are more times than not the cause of many ignition issues. Patton's test would be a good way to check them.
