i was thinking of switching to one carb, and making a manifold for the 4-1 intake setup. with running one carb, instead of the 4, what are the pros and cons of that? does performance suffer? im very curious if its even worth it. for now ill run n/a. thanks a lot!

Pros = one carb to adjust

Cons = performance hit, fabricating manifold, it will cost you more to go this route than to straighten out a set of stock carbs.

The ideal setup is a carb / throttle body & injector for each individual cylinder. That's how they came from the factory. They were / are performance designed engines.

Can it be done? Certainly it can. Ask yourself one question though. If it were better that way, wouldn't the factory have done that?

Oh Lord, the factory isn't always best. If it were, we wouldn't have nearly as much fun modifying our bikes to make them better! The factory does the best it can with the budget its given.

Sure 4 carbs give better performance than a single but that doesn't mean its a terrible idea. The old draw-through turbo kits used one carb. In fact, given our carbs are 30 years old, a new Mikuni HSR 42mm will flow enough air to supply your bike an might not fare so poorly against the 4 carbs.

If you can find an old ATP intake manifold (or buy one from mrturbo) then your fabriated is almost zero.

my 2 cents...

If anyone seriously wants to do a single carb and manifold setup, here's the specs for such a project. This is for a stock KZ1000

Runner lengths = 10.193" ( Cylinder Head Port + Manifold Runner )That's tuned to the 3rd harmonic. Best Power output. Want more torque but less peak HP, then use 14.601"

Plenum Runner Minimum Recommended Entry Area = 1.055 to 1.187 Sq.Inch
Plenum Runner Maximum Recommended Entry Area = 1.239 to 1.466 Sq.Inch

Have fun!
