I thought that ibby method used baking powder? It is different from baking soda.

Good catch there, Kent. Ibby definitely said baking powder, not soda. IIRC, the baking powder is less likely to discolor the metal.
I've actually used baking soda on some of the parts of the carbs I'm rebuilding now, but I'm not worried about making them shine. (I'm dunking most of the parts in Berryman's; they're really, really nasty!)

Powder and soda are different animals. I've always used soda (Arm & Hammer)which is commonly used for cleaning. Never heard of using baking powder for anything other than baking.
