I had a similar problem and finally stripped the harness and replaced the necessary wires and connectors then wrapped it again. The correct US/Canada diagram is still posted on this forum somewhere.

Grumpy, I know you're sending your harness, or are planning to shortly. Here's a New Norton Main harness, wish Kawasaki offered such easy access for replacements. This is the braided version but also had the PVC variation. Vinsky might get a kick out the view of LUCAS boxed stuff!!

One option is to purchase a harness for a 1980 KZ1000 and add any mods necessary for your bike.  I bought a new harness for my 1980 LTD a few years ago.  I suspect everything would be the same except perhaps the gauge wiring.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar.

I hope the box is "flame retardant" Lol

Hardrock the Z1R was a completely different bird. They switchblock LH were completely different, LH side was it's own design. More wires within the Main to facilitate the Amp and Fuel gauges. Deviate from the pedestrian MK2 and LTD. The same but different in soo many ways like a Z1 harness compared to a Z2 harness.

HRM - this would not be impossible but not straight forward (reserve lighting, fuel level warning, self cancelling indicators, additional fuses etc)

We like to be different :) I did my apprenticeship on buses and in the "pre-electronics" days all buses where "earth return" (no chassis ground) it wasn't uncommon for guys looking for shorts to go to the "jump socket" (link straight to the batteries - 4 x 6v) and bridge the poss or neg to the chassis and "look for smoke" - Aghh "the good old days"

I converted a GS1000 shaft drive LTD type harness to work in my 1000S (much like the Z1R with unique gauges).  Stripped off the wrap, and compared circuit by circuit, transferring the needed wires into the new harness.  It was much easier than it sounds.  Great fun!

Ed the differences go a lot deeper than the gauges, to be honest if you have the skills to convert a earlier harness then you have the skills to repair "what you have" - (just my opinion)

That's hilarious Wookie!! As a kid of maybe 9-10yrs old we had a depot of out of service school buses right next to the laundromat we had to walk to. I used to crawl thru those bus carcasses detaching all the dome bulbs with covers i could find. I had a 1957 Dodge sitting in the back yard i was trying to light-up, ha.
